Introduction and purpose:
 Alveolar osteitis, also known as dry socket is a common complication after tooth extraction, especially third molar extraction. Taking into consideration only extractions, the prevalence of reaches even 45%. The aim this literature review was to describe current knowledge about etiology, risk factors, treatment, prevention socket.
 State knowledge:
 symptoms alveolar osteitis most frequently are reported between first post-extraction days they include discomfort, lancing, intense pain which radiates neck ear. etiopathogenesis remains unclear. However, currently accepted hypothesis describes loss formed an extraction blood clot from main cause pathology. Several factors may increase smoking, oral hygiene, female gender, contraceptive drugs, anesthesia. In treatment irrigation with chlorhexidine gluconate, iodopovidone, or physiological saline followed by filling intra-alveolar dressing constitute fundamental procedure. Plenty substances used dressing. Part them exhibits pain-decreasing features, whereas some drugs can stimulate regeneration treated tissue. prevention, use warm saline, antibiotics, chlorhexidine, ozone gas, autologous platelet therapy be useful maneuvers.
 Conclusion:
 This summarizes state causes, therapeutic preventive methods regard osteitis.
